Mademoiselle Magazine to Cease Publication

NEW YORK, Oct. 1 -- Conde Nast Publications has pulled the plug on the women's magazine Mademoiselle after 66 years of publication due to a weak advertising climate worsened by the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and the Pentagon, company spokeswoman Maurie Perl said today.

Industry observers said Mademoiselle hasn't made money for years, and ad pages were down nearly 18 percent for the first eight months of the year.

Editor in chief Mandi Norwood, who was lured away from Hearst two years ago, and publisher Lori Burgess, who joined in late 1999, will leave the magazine, Perl said. Conde Nast will try to place many of the 93-person staff within the company, and those not placed will leave with severance this Friday.

In an internal memo obtained by Reuters, Conde Nast President and Chief Executive Steve Florio told the staff of the New York-based publishing giant that Mademoiselle will be discontinued with the November issue due to "current economic conditions."

Publishers have been hit hard by the widespread economic uncertainty, which has dried up advertising and been exacerbated by the Sept. 11 attacks. Several high-profile titles have folded -- including the Industry Standard -- and many more have slimmed down.
